Lynn Sowers Memorial Foundation

Deputy Lynn Sowers began her career with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office as a dispatcher in April of 1983. She became a Law Enforcement Deputy in November 1985 until January 1990 and from January 1992 until September 1995. 

 

In Memory of Deputy Lynn Sowers

 

The Lynn Sowers Memorial Foundation was created in memory of Deputy Lynn Sowers following her tragic death in 1995. Her fellow employees took up a collection to be given to her family. It was her family’s wish that the money be used for someone in need within the Sheriff’s Office family. The Foundation was established in her honor.

 

The Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization established to financially assist Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office employees who have suffered an unforeseen catastrophic event. To date, the Foundation has distributed over $1,000,000.00 to employees in need, while protecting the identity and privacy of all recipients.

 

The majority of funding is derived from employee donations, mainly through payroll contribution. The Foundation also accepts donations from private sources and the community. Ninety-nine percent of every dollar goes into the Foundation to assist employees and less than 1% goes to operating costs.

 

How It Works

 

Employees or their supervisors may make a request for assistance by contacting the President of the Lynn Sowers Foundation. They will be asked the details surrounding the request. The circumstances surrounding the requests are then presented to the Board for approval. The employee’s name is withheld to ensure confidentiality. The Board must vote unanimously to approve the request.
